This house for a young family sits at an edge between Los Angeles’ urban boulevards and suburban neighborhoods.  The site was identified for its potential as an oversized lot with alley access, but required an architectural solution that would interface domestic needs against commercial surroundings.

The house faces the street, while a detached garage, with ADU above, shields the garden from the alley.  On the ground level, one enters into a double height space between two green walls mimicking the exterior.  Straightahead, the primary living spaces face the garden, while two flexible rooms flank the entry.  Both of these rooms are paired with a bathroom and a pair of sliding doors, allowing each room to function as an ensuite bedroom/bath or as a den/office with a separate powder room.  Up the steel staircase are the child’s bedroom and the primary bedroom suite, each with a private deck hidden from view by overhead walls.  The formal language creates a dialogue between interior and exterior within the house; the misalignments and color walls of the public areas contrast with the clean white boxes of each private room.

Parking is accessed directly from the alley, maximizing outdoor spaces in the front and backyards by eliminating the need for a driveway.  Above the garage, the ADU is understood as an extension of the urban boulevard structures and is a live/work studio space with its own private entrance and parking directly from the alley.
